A lot of Gas agreements had to be renewed and together with EU and USA, Ukraine took the decision to not renew them, even trying to get the price down by alot in some cases but Russia didn’t react to that. Now the West has said that Russia is weaponizing the Gas, which ofc is the opposite of the truth, the West has weaponized the Gas, remember Nord-Stream?, but in order to lessen the reaction by an angry people who will get very expensive gas and LNG from USA (Liquefied Natural Gas). The politicians wants to shut down the gas connection to Russia because of the war and try to hurt Russia financially, but at the same time they risk imploding them selves with high cost and an angry people who will vote in reaction to the de-industrialization and high living cost.

That is the reason why the politicians try and shift the blame to Russia even if it is the West who are trying to hit Russia financially and hope they collapse but reality is that it will hurt the West them selves much more than Russia imo and also be bad politically and even swing everything even more to the right IMO.
